Born on the 25th of September 1948, he studied at the Guntur Medical College in Andhra Pradesh from where he qualified for MD in 1974. He joined the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh in 1975 and obtained DM., in Cardiology in 1978.
With a career spanning over four decades, Dr. Soma Raju has been at the forefront of innovative cardiac care. His significant contributions include India’s first Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) and leading a team that has performed the largest number of Cardiac Interventions in the country. He owns the distinction of performing India’s first Balloon Angioplasty and co-developing the revolutionary Kalam-Raju stent alongside Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam which substantially reduced the cost of stenting and made life-saving treatments affordable and accessible to millions.
As an academician and a researcher, Dr Soma Raju has published over 120 papers in national and international journals and has authored key texts in cardiology including “Clinical Methods in Cardiology”, “Rheumatic fever – Chapter 83, page 2079 Braunwald’s Heart Disease (ed 10th), and A Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine” and “The Baton Should Not Fall” – a book that inspires future healers and guides them in shaping successful careers by providing valuable lessons from the Greats of the Medical Community.
A recipient of the Padma Shri and many prestigious national & international awards, Dr. Soma Raju’s dedication to advancing healthcare through cost-effective solutions continues to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals in India.
